The return of Jack Gilbert paid dividends for HSOB/Burnside as they beat defending champions Harewood 3-1 on Saturday afternoon, their first victory over Harewood in the Canterbury Premier League (CPL) round robin phase since 2008.
Gilbert opened the scoring for Old Boys in the second quarter, with a well-placed drag flick past goalkeeper Tom Mallon, the two on opposite sides again after plying their trade together in England for the past few months. Warwick Allen doubled the Old Boys lead midway through the third quarter, before a frantic final quarter saw Harewood remove Mallon in search of goals, reducing the deficit to one before Moss Jackson put the game beyond doubt scoring into an empty net.
The win moves Old Boys into third on the table, ahead of Harewood by way of goal differential.
In the women’s match, the trend of close matches between the two clubs continued as they could not be separated, the match finishing even at 2-2. Harewood opening the scoring early on, before Rachel McCann brushed aside the jet lag to equalize in her first game back.
